Description
Job Summary
Under supervision, performs professional urban planning work by interpreting zoning regulations, reviewing development proposals, conducting GIS analysis, and supporting planning initiatives. Assists the public, developers, and stakeholders in understanding land use regulations while ensuring compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and comprehensive plans.
Examples of Duties
Performs GIS data management and spatial analysis.
Supports Planning and Zoning Board, Conditional Use and Variance Board, and Board of County Commissioners.
Assists with planning initiatives, public outreach, and community engagement efforts.
Interprets and explains zoning regulations, Comprehensive Plan, and Land Development Code to the public and professionals.
Reviews permits and verifies zoning compliance.
Prepares staff reports, ordinances, and planning documents.
Conducts research on land development and planning-related issues.
Performs field inspections of properties and development sites.
Coordinates planning efforts with consultants and stakeholders.
Presents planning information to boards, committees, and community groups.
Responds to public inquiries regarding planning and zoning matters.
Maintains communication with internal staff, agencies, and the public.
Performs administrative and reporting duties as required.
Requirements
Typical Qualifications
Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Geography, GIS, Public Administration, or related field with some experience
OR
Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 1–2 years of planning experience
Knowledge of ArcGIS or ability to obtain within one year
Valid driver’s license
AICP certification preferred (not required)
